We all have mental health needs – and we all face challenges

Mental health impacts everyone, regardless of background or life path. However, the risk of facing mental health challenges is not the same for everyone. Our mental well-being is shaped not only by our biology but also by the circumstances we are born into, the environments we grow up in, and the conditions in which we live and age. For those facing significant social or economic hardships, the risks to mental health are particularly high. These disparities are what we refer to as mental health inequalities.

At Yuvanis Foundation, we are dedicated to tackling these inequalities head-on. Our work is guided by a clear understanding: addressing social disparities is crucial in reducing the prevalence of mental health issues. We see a pressing need for cross-sectoral action to advance mental wellbeing across our communities.

Bridging the Gap in Mental Health for BAME Communities

Mental health challenges within the BAME (Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic) communities have often been overlooked, stigmatised, or misunderstood. Treatment, when available, has too frequently been inadequate. While awareness is growing and stigma is slowly decreasing, there is still much work to be done before mental health issues and their profound effects on both individuals and society are fully understood and appropriately addressed.

We believe that tackling mental health requires the most dedicated public health effort of our time. By addressing the social, economic, cultural, and environmental factors that impact mental wellbeing, we are helping to lay the groundwork for lasting change within our communities.

Our Approach

Through our initiatives, we are actively:

  • raising awareness: educating the public about the impact of social inequalities on mental health.
  • reducing stigma: working to destigmatise mental health struggles, especially in the BAME community.
  • advocating for change: partnering across sectors to push for policies that address underlying social and economic inequalities.
  • providing support: Offering resources and programs designed to directly aid those facing mental health challenges due to inequality.

Join Us in Creating Change

Mental health problems are complex, but by addressing the roots of inequality, we can make a real difference. Together, let’s work towards an environment where every individual has the opportunity for mental wellness, regardless of their background.
